I take that if you're open and willing to help people, you will probably be taken advantage of....but that it's still worth it to help people. I agree wholeheartedly. (And if I interpreted that incorrectly, I agree wholeheartedly with my incorrect interpretation of your intern's wisdom.)
Reminds me of a song quote which expresses a similar, but not the same, thought: "I'd rather be hurt than be numb."
Probably it's easier for me to remember the quote because it's from a song I wrote but never finished.
