But What About An Unborn Chimp?

I wonder how many of these people are pro-life?

You gotta dance like a monkey, dance like a monkey, child

You mean chimps? Well, you know there's at least one...

That's funny stuff.

Actually, I do know there's at least one (or at least there used to be, I don't know about currently...): One of the seminal moments in my personal philosophy (I'm sure I was no further along than middle school) was reading a book by Peter Singer, the noted animal rights ethicist. In that book he put forth a rather convincing argument regarding abortion and the protection of the life inside as valuable. I recall a vague sense that he was making the argument to serve some other purpose (we should also protect animals) and not for the sake of the argument itself, but that always stuck with me for some reason. Surely a fetus is at least as valuable as a chimp, right? And there's probably a more reasonable claim to some civil rights, right?

Peter Singer, huh? That would be interesting to look at. Got any idea where you found it?

I once met someone who was basically the law professor equivalent of Singer. Forget his name now. My law journal was hosting an animal rights conference.
